In doing the research for my web hosting review site, one thing has continually amazed me, although I guess it really shouldn’t.  It’s how much the review sites vary in their opinions and lists of the best web hosting companies.   What one web site says is a great host, another says STAY AWAY.  Even the user reviews and the forums differ greatly in their opinions.  When choosing a host, you must keep in mind, that like any other situation in life, what is great for one person, totally stinks to someone else.  It could be bad timing, personality clashes, misunderstandings, lack of communication or any number of other things, but for some reason, some people will just never click with certain others.  We’ve all been in situation where either a person or company has just rubbed you wrong from the start and no matter how hard you try to change it, there is nothing you can do.  I don’t think there is a web host out there that doesn’t have any bad reviews that have been written about them.  If there is, I haven’t found it yet. Always remember this when your choosing a web hosting company for your web site.  No matter how official sounding, or how knowledgeable the author is, including this blog, it is still just someone else’s opinion and should be taken as such.  We’ve all heard the saying “Opinions are like ********, everyone has one”.  Of course if all you can find is bad reviews, that has to tell you something.  In the end, its still up to you to choose your web hosting company and you who will have to deal with the out come of your decision.  Hopefully, if you’ve done your research and weighed all the pros and cons of your favorites, you will make the best choice for you, and have a long and successful relationship with your new web hosting company.  I’ll continue to do my best to supply you with as much accurate, up to date information as I can.  I would love to hear your from you  about your experiences with web hosting companies.  Together we can make a difficult chioce much easier to make.

 Types of web hosting

Without going into too much detail, here are several types of web hosting.

FREE WEB HOSTING

The first type is Free web hosting, which is suitable for small personal sites, that have low traffic.  Unfortunately there are disadvantages that go along with the free price.  Your website will probably have banners, pop-ups or the ISP or HSP advertising campaigns on your web page to make up for the cost of maintaining the server. You might not be able to use your own domain name and instead have to use the one set up by your ISP or HSP, which you could be difficult to type and remember, not to mention unprofessional.  Another disadvantage is that the reliability, performance and customer service and be lacking.  Limited disk space and bandwidth could be another problem, as could be up-time.

SHARED WEB HOSTING

Shared Web Site Hosting is the most popular and lowest prices websites.  Many websites are hosted together on one server, making it possible for them offer low prices ($5 to $10 per month).  All the websites share the server and resources (storage space, email accounts, bandwidth), with the web host handling the routine maintenance, upgrades, and management  of the server.  With shared hosting you are able to use your own domain name while they provide you with the software and the tool needed.  Because it is shared the bandwidth might be limited, leaving the possibility that if your site becomes really busy, you could find yourself quickly running out of bandwidth.  Another disadvantage is that it is more susceptible to potential security issues.  The problems with other sites could cause problems with speed or even bring the site down altogether.

DEDICATED WEB HOSTING

Dedicated web hosting is exactly the opposite of shared hosting, where you have the full server dedicated to your website.  You get loads of bandwidth and disk space, with total of you web presence.  You choose the operating system, software to use, multimedia settings, etc.  It is ideal for websites with high traffic and large business who want control to fine tune it to their needs.  You can also resell the bandwidth to people who want to set up their own websites.  With no other users it is much more secure and reliable. Setting up a dedicated server and operating it is rather difficult requiring the user to have a higher knowledge  base in order to manage basic daily operation of the resources of the server, server maintenance, and system administration.  This is one of the most expensive types of the web hosting.

RESELLER WEB HOSTING

Reseller web hosting is ideal for entrepreneurs who want to host on behalf of their own customers.  This service is provided by an ISP or HSP and you make an arrangement to resell it under your own brand.  This allows you as the user to generate an income, and can be offered in conjunction with web design service, making it a complete package.  This type of web hosting is very popular with large businesses that have many customers who want web hosting services.  The main disadvantage is that is must be constantly monitored and you must provide customer support to your client.

VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER (VSP)

Virtual Private Servers (Virtual Private Server) provide the same features as dedicated server for multiple web hosting customers in the form of virtual computers.  The resources are shared, but they are allocated in such a way so that you get a certain percentage for you and only you to use.  Much like a dedicated server, you can not tell anyone else is on it and is always available to you.  This is a ver attractive niche hosting solution for a good portion of the web hosting clients who would like the stability of a dedicated server on a smaller scale.  Your site will be more consistent while costing much less than a dedicated site. As with all web hosting types ther is always a down side.  With VPS there is the possiblilty that the ISP or HSP will oversell in terms of service more than is physically available in jopes that the users will not use all their advertised service to make up for any shortfall.   This could end up causing problems forevery one hosted by them.

GREEN HOSTING – ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE

With all the concern regarding the state of the environment and global warming, there is now a handful of companies offering a new choice  - Green Web Hosting.  Web Servers are notorious for using lots of power as they run 24/7 all year long.  These companies are using several methods to keep a low carbon footprint on the planet.  Using renewable energy as a power source is one of the ways they are doing their part to lower the environmental impact.  Many encourage their employees to live green thereby spreading the green ethic throughout the community.  Use of more energy efficient servers, propane backup generators, work at home programs, curtailing the use of paper products in the office, planting a tree for each client, and running solar powered offices are a few of  the things being implemented toward environmental footprint reduction efforts.   Others purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (REC;s) and Emmission Reduction Credits (ERC’s) which encourages energy providers to use renewable energy while reducing the need for non-renewable energy.  Some are even generating their own power directly from renewable sources, usually solar and wind.  Web hosts of all sizes are making the commitment to help the environment and while you might think they would be more expensive because of this,  in reality, they can be just as affordable.  Not only is this a benefit to the environment, you will be seen by your clients as a leader in the effort to save the environment.
